#10YearsOfBlackCoffee

South African media agency MADE designed a mass market campaign promoting the launch of the Red Bull Black Coffee hero can, coinciding with 10 years since the release of Black Coffee’s first track and meteoric rise to fame.  We love how this campaign was built by die-hard Black Coffee fans, for his fans, making it an all the more authentic celebration of a great musician’s accomplishments. Illustrations of key milestones in Black Coffee’s career were used as social share content, and featured on a campaign microsite. We’ve captured some of our favourite illustrations here.

Black Coffee started producing music while still in high school, but it was while studying music at Natal Technikon, where things became more serious when he and two friends turned their backs on the books and formed ‘Shana’. The group – meaning ‘simply hot and naturally’ – went on to release four albums. In 2001 he landed a residency at Voodoo Lounge nightclub, a gig that got him set for the road to stardom, but it was really in 2003, when he was chosen as one of two South African participants in the Red Bull Music Academy that Black Coffee became a brand in the South African DJ scene.
